Is Joo Won, Oh Yeon-Seo's ‘My Sassy Girl’ Better Than The 2001 Film?

With only 13-day left before “My Sassy Girl” premieres, screenwriter Yoon Hyo Je explained the difference between the upcoming SBS drama and Cha Tae Hyun-Jun Ji Hyun's 2001 film.

“I wanted to try making a historical drama version because I felt that the devices used in the original would feel new and innovating inside a historical setting,” All Kpop quoted Yoon Hyo Je as saying before a group of local media. “There are situations and set ups from the original that we incorporated into the historical drama, but it will still be a completely different drama all on its own.”

Even though the production team brings over fundamental theme from history, Yoon Hyo Je asked viewers to regard “My Sassy Girl” as a fictional historical drama. While the drama takes place in the Kingdom of Joseon, it only features few real characters from the history.

In “My Sassy Girl,” actor Joo Won transforms into a cold-hearted city scholar, Gyun Woo, who is known as Joseon’s national treasure. Actress Oh Yeon Seo, on the other hand, plays Princess Hyemyung, a troublemaker from a royal family.

Besides Joo Won and Oh Yeon Seo, “My Sassy Girl” also stars CNBLUE's Lee Jung Shin and Kim Yoon Hye. The former plays a handsome and charismatic man Kang Joon Young, while the latter plays Jung Da Yeon, the only daughter of a royal court high official. Though she appears elegant and classy, Jung Da Yeon is actually the queen bee in her social circle and must get whatever she wants no matter what.

“My Sassy Girl” would be Joo Won’s last project before he starts his two-year mandatory military service on May 16,” Drama Fever reported. He will first go through a basic military training at the Korea Army Training Center for five weeks, before continuing his 21-month service as an active duty soldier.

"My Sassy Girl" premieres on May 29 at 10:00 PM (KST).
