“Pacific Rim: Uprising” has been in development for quite some time now due to numerous delays, but the upcoming sequel to the 2013 giant monsters vs. robots flick has already wrapped up filming and is on track for its highly anticipated release next year.

The upcoming film, titled “Pacific Rim: Uprising” is slated to hit theaters on Feb. 23, 2018. The sequel was originally scheduled for a Aug. 4, 2017 release, but was later pulled from Universal’s release calendar and postponed to next year.

Director Guillermo del Toro will be replaced by Steven S. DeKnight, who will make his directorial feature debut with the upcoming project based on a script penned by “Jurassic World” and “Kong: Skull Island” scribe Derek Connolly. Although DeKnight has some big shoes to fill, his credits include several television shows like  “Daredevil,” “Spartacus,” “Angel” and “Smallville.”

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” actor John Boyega confirmed via Twitter that he’s playing the role of Jake Pentecost in the film. Jake is the son of Idris Elba’s Stacker Pentecost, who sacrificed himself in the final moments of the original. Boyega stars alongside Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Cailee Spaeny, Ivanna Sakhno, and Adria Arjon.

The plot details of “Pacific Rim 2” have been kept under wraps but what we do know is that the film will be taking place a few years after the first film, in a world where Kaijus are no longer a threat to humanity thanks to the Jaeger technology but we all know that won’t last for long.

There are reports claiming that Dr. Newton “Newt” Geisler (Charlie Day) and Dr. Herman Gottlieb (Burn Gorman) will play a significant role in the follow-up, leading to speculation that Newt’s experiments with the Kaiju minds might mess with him psychologically, potentially turning him to the dark side in the sequel.

We have also learned that the origins of the Kaiju monsters will be explored in further detail, so it could be possible that Newt’s connection with the alien creatures could trigger the inevitable conflict between man and monster.

Stay tuned for more news and updates on “Pacific Rim: Uprising.”
