'Super Mario Odyssey': Will Nintendo 'Win' E3 2017 Again with Just a Single Game?

By Jazz Rosin / 2017.05.15

Last year's Electronic Entertainment Expo saw Nintendo showcase their main superstar title, "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," with stellar results. Is the company planning to recreate that with "Super Mario Odyssey" this year?

Nintendo to Showcase "Super Mario Odyssey" at E3 2017

Nintendo will again be holding its very own Nintendo Treehouse event at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo, instead of the traditional press conference that other huge names like Sony, Bethesda, Xbox and Ubisoft have been doing.

In a recent press release, (via Nintendo Life), the game company giant announced that everyone's favorite plumber, Mario (Sorry, Luigi), will be headlining the event with his upcoming Nintendo Switch game "Super Mario Odyssey." Here's a snippet from the press release about it:

When Nintendo’s booth space opens at noon on June 13, show attendees will be among some of the first people in the world to get their hands on "Super Mario Odyssey", as well as other games for Nintendo Switch. "Super Mario Odyssey" is Mario’s first sandbox-style game since "Super Mario 64" and "Super Mario Sunshine".

Nintendo to Get "Game of the Show" with "Super Mario Odyssey" at E3?

Fans can remember that Nintendo has dedicated almost its whole E3 show floor to the then upcoming "Zelda" game, which was more of a shrine than anything. Nintendo's efforts paid off in the end, bagging multiple "E3 2016 Game of the Show" accolades, and has become the most talked about game in the entire conference, according to BrandWatch.

With "Super Mario Odyssey" the star of Nintendo Treehouse this year, it looks like Nintendo is going for the same approach they did last year with "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild."

I mean, sure, there will be tournaments for "Splatoon 2" and "ARMS," but we are pretty sure Nintendo is more likely to focus on its main attraction this year. We won't be expecting a stampede this year for "Super Mario Odyssey," however.
