Will 'New Girl' be Renewed for Season 7? Showrunner Talks Potential Story, Plot

After six successful seasons, Fox’s “New Girl” finally came to a close with Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) rekindling the romance the show put on hold in the third season. Since then, fans have been eager to know whether or not the sitcom series will return for Season 7.

Even though the possibility of “New Girl” Season 7 is still on the table, showrunner Liz Meriwether said her marching orders were to write an episode that could satisfyingly serve as the end of her series. While she would be happy if that is how it all ends, she is also hoping for more.

“We wanted to end the show in a way that made sense for the fans and us, but also leave the door open for another season,” Liz Meriwether said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “If I had known this was definitely the end, I don't know that everything would be exactly the same in the episode. But I feel like we did a good job in the situation that we were in.”

If “New Girl” Season 7 happens, there will most likely be a ten-year time jump – where Winston Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece Parekh (Hannah Simone) already have the baby. It may also feature Winston Schmidt getting promoted at work and/or becoming a detective.

“I love these characters, and it's fun seeing them slowly progress into adulthood,” Liz Meriwether continued. “Hopefully, we could get Nasim [Pedrad] back. I love her and Lamorne [Morris] together. There's a lot of fun there. The Nick and Jess thing is a continuing riddle.”

In other news, Zooey Deschanel gave birth to her second child, son Charlie Wolf Pechenik, last week in Los Angeles, PEOPLE reported. Charlie Wolf joins big sister, Elsie Otter, whom Deschanel and Jacob Pechenik welcomed in July 2015.
