NFL Draft Trade Rumors: Browns Acquiring 49ers #2 Pick

By Fred Richardson / 2017.04.20

The 2017 NFL Draft is one week away and trade rumors are flying around the league, especially surrounding the Cleveland Browns who own the #1 pick, and the San Francisco 49ers who own the #2 pick in the draft.

The consensus #1 pick around the league is Texas A&M DL Myles Garrett. Despite this, the Browns have reportedly shown significant interest in UNC QB Mitch Trubisky, who could step in and fill the QB void that the Browns are desperate to fill.

Indeed, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter tweeted out questions marks around the #1 pick saying, “Cleveland has not made up its mind at No. 1, per source. Split opinions. Some like Myles Garrett, some like Mitchell Trubisky. We will see.”

Dan Patrick said on his radio show, “I'm hearing if you really want Trubisky, you're going to have to go up to 5.”

The only way that Cleveland could guarantee picking both Garrett and Trubisky, would be to trade for the #2 pick in the draft, owned by the 49ers.

San Francisco GM John Lynch has announced to the world last week that the 49ers are “open for business”.

The 49ers were 2-14 last season and have a ton of needs and would seemingly like to pick up as many picks as possible. Besides the #1 pick, the Browns also own the #12 and the #33 pick in the NFL Draft.  The Browns could potentially package both picks in an attractive offer to the 49ers, along other picks in the 2017 or 2018 draft, in order to acquire San Francisco’s #2 pick.

Mary Kay Kabot of Cleveland.com reported yesterday that “Browns head of football operations Sashi Brown admitted Wednesday he's game for trading up from No. 12  -- and although he wouldn't confirm it, the target is presumably quarterback Mitch Trubisky.”

Sacramento Bee 49ers reporter Matt Barrows told KNBR that the Browns trading up is “Another interesting possibility is that the Browns trade up, as well… They can guarantee that they get (Trubisky) if they trade with the 49ers.”

Would the Browns make the big move to guarantee themselves the top 2 players they covet?  If so, the 49ers would be on the receiving of a large haul of picks including 3 first-round graded draft picks including the #12, #33, and #34 pick they already own.
