‘Ruler: Master of the Mask’: 5 Things to Know Before Kim So Hyun, Yoo Seung Ho’s Drama Premieres

By Maolen E. / 2017.04.20

With only four episodes left before “Radiant Office” ends, K-drama lovers are already wondering which television series will take over MBC’s Wednesday and Thursday timeslot.

In May, MBC and director No Do Cheol are bringing us “Ruler: Master of the Mask.” From cast to release date to plot details and more – here is what you should know before the series premiere:

1. PLOT DETAILS

Set in the 18th-century Joseon, “Ruler: Master of the Mask” tells the story of Crown Prince Lee Sun (Yoo Seung Ho) and his battle against a powerful and wealthy organization called Pyunsoo-Hwe – who controls the nation due to its monopoly of the entire water supply.

With the help of the woman (Kim So Hyun) he loves, Crown Prince Lee Sun overcomes difficulty and grows as an equitable ruler.

2. IT MARKS YOO'S DRAMA COMEBACK

“Ruler: Master of the Mask” is Yoo’s first television project since 2015’s “Remember: War of the Son.” In between that and this year’s comeback, he took her talents to the big screen and have starred as Kim In Hong / Kim Seon Dal in 2016’s “Seondal: The Man Who Sells the River.”

“I was sold on the loaded script and the appealing character of Lee Sun and chose this production,” All Kpop quoted the 23-year-old Hallyu star as saying. “I will do my best to show a new side of me, I haven't shown yet through 'Monarch' (‘Ruler: Master of the Mask’), so please look forward to it."

For Kim, the upcoming MBC series is her follow-up drama after starring in tvN’s “Hey Ghost, Let's Fight” opposite 2PM’s Ok Taecyeon.

3. THE SUPPORTING CAST

Besides Yoo and Kim, the new MBC drama also stars Kim Myung Soo (INFINITE’s L) and Yoon So Hee. The former plays Lee Sun, the son of a lower-class citizen who has a brilliant personality and burning passion –  which frequently ends up being an issue in his socioeconomic class.

Yoon, on the other hand, plays Kim Hwa Gun, the granddaughter of the head of the secret organization. She discards everything and even betrays her family in order to love Crown Prince Lee Sun.

4. IS 'RULER: MASTER OF THE MASK' THE NEXT 'MOONLIGHT DRAWN BY CLOUDS?'

According to The Kpop Herald, the new MBC drama attracted comparisons to the hit KBS 2TV series “Moonlight Drawn by Clouds” as both are Joseon historical dramas with young lead actors born in 1993 (Park Bo-Gum and Yoo) and 1999 (Kim Yoo-Jung and So-Hyun).

5. OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE

“Ruler: Master of the Mask” consists of 20 episodes. It is expected to premiere on May 10 at 10:00 PM (KST).
